Welcome to 4th grade ELA/Social Studies!
I'm so happy to be a returning 4th grade ELA and Social Studies teacher at Rock Springs! I grew up here in middle TN and graduated with a master's degree in Elementary Education from UTK in 2013. I've been teaching for nine years and have experience ranging from pre-k to 5th grade. I absolutely LOVE teaching 4th grade and strive to make it a fun year while maintaining high academic expectations for all students.
In ELA, we use a curriculum that engages students in discussion and collaboration while we dive deep into complex texts. Students start the year exploring poetry as we simultaneously teach character development and build a love of writing. Our focus early in the year includes writing four-paragraph essays and thinking about what inspires authors (including themselves!) to write. Other main topics of study include animal defenses, the American Revolution, and the women's suffrage movement. Students build deeper knowledge in these science or social studies topics while reading, discussing, and writing about rich and rigorous text. Our curriculum is carefully designed to dig deep into vocabulary, writing, fluency, grammar, effective learning habits, and so much more while students also build content knowledge.
In social studies we use the Gallopade curriculum, which can be accessed online via Clever. In 4th grade we learn about US history starting with colonization and ending with the Civil War. Some of our main focuses are conflicts with the Native Americans during colonization, the American Revolution, and the Constitution. I love teaching history and try to help students see why it is so important to learn about the past!
Many parents want to know how to help at home. One of the best ways to support your child is to have them read daily and help them find books they enjoy. If you'd like your child to have additional writing practice, you may also want to have your child write a response to what they've read. Another way to help is by reviewing your child's work with them and discussing questions they missed. If you're concerned about your child's progress and would like to discuss more options for practicing at home, please reach out to me and we can work together to determine how to best support your child's learning.
If you need to contact me, you may use either Class Dojo or email - email@example.com
I mainly use ClassDojo for general updates and communication. I recommend downloading the free ClassDojo phone app to ensure you always stay in the loop with what's happening at school. Please note that any urgent communication (such as a transportation change) must go through the front office, since I may not be able to view messages until after school. I will always reply to parent questions and concerns within a 24-hour business day.
I look forward to another wonderful year at Rock Springs!
