WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten is more than just an opportunity for children to socialize and learn about colors and shapes.  This is an important year in the life of youngsters!  A well-run classroom (in person or through a distance learning platform) should offer kids developmentally-appropriate learning opportunities, without pushing them beyond what they can handle, while continuing to challenging them!  It should also provide them with playtime, as well as a chance to recharge and refuel their bodies with naps or snacks.

Above all, kindergarten is the time when kids acquire early educational skills so that they're not only ready -- but also excited -- to move on to first grade.  Children within this age group are like little sponges.  They love learning, and they are eager to do so.  Preserving this mindset is one of the most important tasks a kindergarten teacher should accomplish. (And, it's something that parents, babysitter, nannies, and any other child care provider can help with at home, too!)

Kindergarten is school for children from 4 to 6 years old depending on their birthday.  The average age of most kindergarteners is 5, but many children aren't actually ready -- whether developmentally or emotionally -- to enter school until they're older. In fact, it's not uncommon for some kids to begin kindergarten at age 6.  With that in mind, kindergarten students will come into the classroom with a wide range of skills and background knowledge.  Some students will be proficient with colors and shapes, but they will need leadership and guidance from the teacher (with parent support from home) with letter identification, phonics (letter sounds), counting, and number recognition and operations.  Others, may enter kindergarten reading sight words, sentences, or small books as well as a basic understanding of counting and cardinality with algebraic thinking.  Our goal is for each child to progress though each year at his/her own pace to meet the end of the year objectives and beyond when appropriate.

MEET THE TEACHER

Hi! My name is Christine Mann, and I am SO excited to be your child’s teacher! This year begins my twenty-second year of teaching and my fifteenth year as a kindergarten teacher. I have taught fourth grade, second grade, and kindergarten. Needless to say, Kindergarten is my MOST favorite! This year will be a new adventure full of lots of learning for us all. I can’t wait to get to know your little one, and I want you to learn a little about me, too.

I have been blessed with a wonderful family that brings me great pride and joy every day! My oldest son, Brett, is seventeen and a senior at Stewarts Creek High School. My youngest son, Brody, is sixteen and a junior at Stewarts Creek High School.  My husband, Brian, lost his courageous battle against cancer in September of 2019.  My boys and I  have two furry family members, Thor (chocolate lab) and Zeus (cat). These critters keep us on our toes!

When I am not at school, I love to spend time with my family! We love all things outdoors: canoeing, camping, swimming, etc. Brett is very active in the FFA at the high school, and this will be Brody's third year on the high school swim team. Our indoor days have been spent working on home renovations. We seem to stay very busy, but when I have “me” time I love to read!

Thank you for sharing your child with me this year. Please feel free to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns!
